EX® helps smokers quit by “re-learning life without cigarettes.” It helps smokers do everything they used to do with a cigarette without one.

Tobacco addiction is complex. It works its way into almost every aspect of people’s lives. Beating that addiction takes a comprehensive plan that addresses the physical, behavioral and social aspects of smoking.

BecomeAnEX.org, the EX website, offers smokers a free plan to quit with information such as:

  • The importance of identifying smoking triggers and learning how to handle these triggers without cigarettes before trying to quit;
  • The addictive nature of nicotine and how it actually changes the brain so that it’s much more difficult to quit without the aid of nicotine replacement or non-nicotine medication;
  • The importance of support from friends and family, whether they are helping during a rocky period or even just giving some space.

The site also includes a growing virtual community, where smokers who are trying to quit can connect with others to share support and encouragement. EX is also available on mobile platforms, including the iPhone, to provide smokers with quitting information and help to beat cravings throughout the day.

After successful pilot tests, EX was launched nationally in 2008. Between 2008 and 2011 the campaign received support from the National Alliance for Tobacco Cessation (NATC), a  group of states, non-profit organizations, foundations and corporations brought together by Legacy to help people quit smoking.
