Policy Issues

Legacy has issued policy positions and taken significant action on several key issue areas in tobacco control.

  1. Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act” H.R. 1256: To protect the public health by providing the Food and Drug Administration with certain authority to regulate tobacco products
  2. Smoking in the Movies: Legacy brings attention to the issue and the importance of protecting America's children from pro-tobacco messaging and images in feature films. For more info, click here.
  3. Public Education: Public education has long been lauded as an effective intervention and critical component of public health.

Legacy’s core mission is two pronged focusing on both prevention and cessation. With the creation of major national brands, Legacy provides the American public with informative and life-saving messages on tobacco use. Legacy directs the truth® campaign – the nation’s sole youth tobacco prevention campaign not directed by a tobacco company.
  4. Prevention: truth® is the largest youth smoking prevention campaign in the country – and the only national campaign not directed by the tobacco industry. For more info, click here.
  5. Cessation: The EX® campaign re-learning your life without cigarettes. For more info, click here.
  6. Little Cigars and Cigarillos: While little cigars and “cigarillos” were once considered fringe products, their popularity has increased dramatically. From 1997 - 2007 little cigars sales increased 240% and cigarillos increased 150% while sales of large cigars has decreased. Legacy is raising awareness about these products and the known usage patterns. For more info, click here.
