Online Social Networks and Smoking Cessation: Strategic Research Opportunities

Overview / Background / Proceedings

On September 30th and October 1st, 2010, the Schroeder Institute hosted the conference “Online Social Networks and Smoking Cessation: Strategic Research Opportunities.” This 2-day conference was the first in a series of meetings that will bring together multidisciplinary experts to address extraordinary research opportunities in tobacco control. This highly interactive, goal-oriented conference was designed to develop a set of practical funding and research priorities for next-generation tobacco interventions that leverage the powerful potential of online social network technology. Recognized experts – both researchers and practitioners – in the fields of social network analysis, sociology, and behavior change presented a comprehensive overview of the potential and pitfalls, and challenged participants to envision the next generation of behavior change interventions.

The planning committee and staff are currently drafting a series of white papers laying out the findings and recommendations from the two days of intensive work.

Copies of presenters’ slides where available have been posted, click here.
