Pallavi D. Patwardhan, PhD, is the inaugural Ellen R. Gritz Postdoctoral Fellow in Tobacco Control at the Schroeder Institute. Dr. Patwardhan is a pharmacist by training, and recently completed her doctoral studies in Social and Administrative Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Patwardhan has a Minor in Sociology, with expertise in survey development, psychometric evaluation and qualitative methods.
Dr. Patwardhan’s research interests are in using mixed methodological approaches to conduct community-based intervention research to: 1) identify mechanisms for long term cessation, and 2) integrate tobacco cessation services in routine healthcare delivery. She is particularly interested in populations at disproportionate risk for tobacco use dependence.
Funded by the state of Wisconsin, Dr. Patwardhan recently completed research to design, implement, and evaluate a brief tobacco cessation counseling protocol in community pharmacies serving low socioeconomic areas. Dr. Patwardhan led a partnership between the Wisconsin Quit Line and a large chain pharmacy that allowed pharmacists to proactively refer interested smokers to the Quit Line. The design and implementation of the tobacco cessation counseling protocol was guided by a formative qualitative investigation led by Dr. Patwardhan. This project and several others have received professional recognition at regional and national pharmacy meetings. Dr. Patwardhan was a recipient of a dissertation fellowship grant at the University of Wisconsin.
