Dissemination

Disseminating what is learned from various grant-making initiatives is one way the Foundation is building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. 

Since 2000, grants have been awarded to community-based organizations, public agencies, institutions of higher education, and Native American tribes across the country.

Funds have helped to develop technical assistance and training resources, community partnerships, youth activism, and counter-marketing and grassroots marketing campaigns.

Publications of findings and highlights of replicable, sustainable projects include:

• New: Tobacco Control in Rural America
  
  This July 2009 publication highlights tobacco-related disparities facing rural areas and examines the unique challenges to tobacco control and prevention efforts in these areas.  It also includes examples of promising interventions implemented by some of our grantees to demonstrate how organizations are addressing the issue of tobacco use in rural communities.
  
• "Building Effective Collaborations: Organizations and Communities Working Together in Tobacco Control"
  
  This February 2009 publication broadens the discussion on collaboration and examines a variety of ways in which organizations can engage different partners and community members to implement a tobacco control and prevention program. 
  
• "Sustainability Beyond Dollars:  Organizations Achieving Long-Term Success in Community-Based Tobacco Control"
  
  "Sostenibilidad Mas Alla de los Dolares: Organizaciones Logrando el Exito a Largo Plazo en el Control del Tabaco Basado en la Comunidad"
  
  This October 2008 report broadens the discussion on sustainability beyond funding. It examines how a host of other factors besides financial resources affect sustainability of a tobacco control program and how organizations can improve the chances of continuing an effective program by taking a broad and planned approach to sustainability.
  
• "Community Voices Initiative: Promoting Systems Change in Community Driven Tobacco Control"
  
  "Voces de la Comunidad: Una Iniciativa Promoviendo Cambio al Nivel de Sistemas Relacionado con el Control de Tabaco en la Comunidad"
  
  This May 2008 publication examines how Legacy’s Community Voices grantees created systems-level changes to provide tobacco cessation and prevention services primarily to disadvantaged communities. 
  
• "Priority Populations Initiative: Breaking New Ground and Building Capacity in Cultural Tailoring" 
  
  "Iniciativa de Poblaciones de Priordad: Abriendo Nuevos Caminos y Desarrollando Capacidad en Adaptacion Cultural" 
  
  Also available in Spanish, this March 2007 publication focuses on working effectively with the rainbow of cultures found in the U.S.
  
• "Youth Empowerment: The Future of Tobacco Control in Action"
  
  "Poder Juvenil: El Futuro de Control de Tabaco en Accion"
  
  This May 2007 publication tells the history of Legacy’s Youth Empowerment Program, in which 18 state departments of health developed initiatives based on the concept that encouraging young people to take leadership in tobacco control activities would give a powerful boost to youth outreach.
  
• "Listening to the Frontline in Cessation: Voices of Legacy Grantees"
  
  This January 2007 report highlights the Foundation’s commitment to supporting cessation and illustrates how organizations funded by Legacy are helping to change the landscape of public health education through cessation work.
